The University of Hawaiʻi Vice President Vice President for Academic Planning and Policy Risa Dickson presented the university’s proposed tuition schedule for fall 2017 through spring 2020 at a public meeting at Windward Community College on April 5.
I get this question a lot. I forgot to mention that the school was very affordable at the time. My first semester in college apartments cost me $1650 for 4 1/2 months. I did not pay out of state tuition because the University of Hawaii has a much lower tuition fee for Western states. Although cost of apartments did go up while I was there, I had some part time jobs and applied for grants, scholarships and loans. Grants and scholarships helped me with about $7,000 during my time there which I didn't have to pay back. My family helped me pay for things like health insurance which cost about $500 per semester and books and sometimes tuition when I was short. I did my very best to make a lot with a little. One time a professor assigned a list of books we had to buy. One of them was at...

La Pietra: Hawaii School for Girls raised over $350,000 for tuition assistance on Saturday night via "HOOPLA," its biggest fundraiser of the year. "At La Pietra, 40 percent of our girls are on some sort of financial aid," said Mahina Eleneki Hugo, head of school. HOOPLA, held on the Great Lawn, dates back four decades. Two-hundred-fifty people attended the event, themed "2017 Pop Up." The pop art theme could be seen in many auction items and even in the decorated faces and colorful hair of some attendees. Vintage Hawaiiana, exclusive vacation getaways, upscale jewelry, antique furniture, contemporary Hawaiian woodwork, golf getaways, and hosted private parties were among the other items up for auction. La Pietra girls with tablets facilitated bidders. The Great Lawn was transformed by colo...
Brandon Archilla, a former barber and truck driver, is now on his way to an all-expenses paid path that will lead him to a six-figure salary. He's one of 525 students getting paid to learn a trade at a five-year plumbing apprenticeship program in New York City, run by Plumbers Local Union 1 in Queens. Competition for the program is stiff, and demand is high. Archilla was one of thousands who literally lined up in the street when applications became available. ‘I waited on line for three days, slept on the street,’ said Archilla. ‘About a year later they called me to get in, which is probably the best thing that’s happened to me.’ As part of the program, Archilla gets paid $14 an hour to attend school and work under supervision. At the end of five years, he will earn more than $65 an hour a...

His shanty is styled on Korean karaoke rooms. While here, all are welcome to come and sing a song, no matter how bad. The shanty is more of a comfy cocoon than a regular karaoke room, so as you can see, inhibitions disappear. Here, students sing R.E.M., or try to. One of the biggest decisions parents make is where to send their kids to school. Hawaii families opt for private over public schools at a higher rate than the national average -- even with tuition costs approaching $20,000 a year. Why? Are private schools that much better for our children? Or does Hawaii have an inferiority complex about its public schools? On this edition of INSIGHTS, host Daryl Huff and guests will discuss Public or Private School: Which is better for your child and your family?
